I almost made it to 100 but I actually have about 20 - 30 more pictures on another document. I know its gonna take a very long time to sort those out, and I don’t wanna stress myself out so I’m gonna wait.
91a 91b. “Thank you Sid” …atleast until a car drives by and blows the smoke out, throwing all hope out the window. But it makes sense. Sid did give Woody the match by putting it in his pocket (by accident of course) since again Sid was trying to destroy Buzz. But the car knocking the lighter out makes sense, cause Pixar knew Sid (Disney) originally wanted to destroy Buzz, so why capitalize on that lol. 92a 92b. This reminds me of the scene way in the beginning of the movie, when Buzz tells Woody he likes wearing his helmet cause he thought the air was toxic. Now, at the end of the movie, Woody uses that same helmet to light the match. It just shows that no matter how different they are, they can still help each other, again just like Disney and Pixar. 93. After lighting the match, Woody second guesses himself, “Wait a minute, rockets explode!” To me this is Disney talkin. They just threw a random idea out and now they don’t know how its gonna play out. 94. After being lifted into the air, woody drops RC and it hits Mr Potato Head! I think this was for all the little side comments he gave Woody earlier in the movie, revenge basically. They took like 20 minutes fixing him up only to have him get pummeled again lol. 95. Woody thinks they’re gonna fall and die, but Buzz tells him their flying. This is a good interpretation of bad ideas. You think the idea is gonna bomb but it ends up saving them. Buzz calls it “falling with style” quoting Woody earlier in the film. It’s basically Pixar saying “even if this movie bombs we’re still gonna look good” 96. Happy Ending! Buzz and Woody (Pixar and Disney) were able to put their differences to the side and make him (and the audience) happy.
I almost made it to 100 but I actually have about 20 - 30 more pictures on another document. I know its gonna take a very long time to sort those out, and I don’t wanna stress myself out so I’m gonna wait. 71. “How did I get stuck with you as a moving buddy” This goes along with what I said above with #70. Sometimes (as workers, animators, and even companies like Disney and Pixar) you’re forced to work with people you don’t like. 72a 72b. Woody tries to convince Buzz to get the crate off him so they can get back to Andy, but Buzz doesn’t believe in himself. All the yelling that Woody (Disney) has done ever since they met has made Buzz (Pixar) lose some of their confidence. They thought they were creative, now not so much. Woody also tells him that regardless who he is, he is Andy’s toy and that’s all he cares about. To me that’s Pixar saying “It doesn’t matter if we hate each other, or if we agree on what ideas go into these movies, what matters is we make the audience happy” and their absolutely right. (skipped 73) 74. While trying to work together to please the kids, someone else always wants to ruin the fun with their own agenda… 75. The company won’t help, so the only help they get comes from people his kind / that understand him and understand his goals. 76. Meanwhile, the audience (in this case Andy) suffers… 77. Usually it’s the cute one who distracts the guard, but this time it’s the other way around… 78a 78b. Woody is playing dead again, which confuses Buzz but we know its for a good cause. 79. Usually when you light a rocket like this, your hope is that it goes in the air and explodes, but we all know that’s not what Sid (Disney) wants to do, they just wanna break stuff. 80. “We toys can see everything, so play nice” = “We at Pixar know what you guys are trying to do, so don’t mess with us” 81. “We don’t like being blown up Sid” = “We don’t like being bossed around Disney” 82. “The toys are alive!” = “Pixar are running the show, we can’t have that!” 83. Woody sees Buzz needs help and goes back to help him. Pixar knows that even though they have different views, they realise that working together and having them both there will make the kid happy. I also read that the license plate number here A113 is the name of some animation studio but I don’t know all the details on it. Just an FYI. 84. I think I heard about this on one of those behind the scenes videos on the movie, about how the moving van was Disney moving away from some format (can’t remember which) but I get what they mean. Regardless if this movie was a success or not they still would’ve made more movies, but obviously Woody and Buzz are here to stay. 85. The dog (Disney) sees Woody and Buzz are trying to get back on the truck and make Andy happy, so he tries to stop that… stupid animal… 86a 86b. The toys still think Andy harmed Buzz, so they try to attack him. As they attack, one guy spins woody in circles. To me it reflects the way Disney and Pixar worked on this movie: one minute their fighting over an idea, the next minute their collaborating. It’s a constant circle. 87. Disney spent so much time trying to stop Pixar’s idea, they could’ve hurt someone, had these people crashed… 88. The man with no face / afraid to show his face is the one giving the orders, oh the irony… 89. As you can see here, the toys make Molly happy… 90a 90b. Slinky tries to pull Woody and Buzz onto the truck but it doesn’t work. Instead they end up just hurting him. This was all caused by Disney trying to separate certain ideas from the movie, so not only do you hurt the kids, you also hurt Woody’s friends.
54a 54b. The claw tells them its their master now, even though Buzz thought he was in charge… not anymore. In some ways I think this is a metaphor for the bigger corporation at work who controls both Disney and Pixar. I just don’t know who that is. Or the claw could represent the kids, who in some ways control both of em cause if they keep arguing and creatively can’t sort themselves out, the movie won’t get finished and the kids will be without a movie and ultimately suffer. 55. While they continue to bicker, one alien reminds them that they are not the boss anymore, same thing I said in #54. 56a 56b. Buzz gets chosen, and Woody tries to leave but gets dragged back by the toys. Disney trying to take the easy way out, but Pixar is saying “No I want you to see this” 57. “Let’s go home and play” Right now, Disney is Sid, trying to make them do what they don’t wanna do… 58. Buzz and the alien still think this is part of the game, but Woody reminds them they won’t be coming back out… I know there’s a metaphor here I just can’t get my head around it. 59. Sids dog doesn’t like toys lol. 60a 60b. Sid tries to bully Woody, trying to make him talk, then 5 seconds later he jumps up for poptarts, reminding us how fast he is to change attitude. Just like any other business person, they try to act tough, but give em what they want and they immediately shut up lol. 61a 61b. Be quiet around the boss, or he’ll wake up and try to eat you / give you a lecture… 62. After watching some tv commercial, Buzz finally realizes he’s just a toy… 63. He tries to fly, but falls. Again the flying is a metaphor for the box office / making Disney proud, even though Buzz mostly represents Disney. Woody (Pixar) told him he can’t fly, but Disney thought they could do it anyway, and they failed. 64. Even though you didn’t please Disney, kids will still appreciate you. Or this could be saying, after you failed and learned your lesson, a kid might wanna give you a second chance. 65. And it’s okay to have an identity crisis after something like that… 66a 66b. Buzz is sad that he couldn’t fly out the window, but Woody suggests the other window is a better idea. In any company, sometimes you have the right idea, but not the right method, and others can help you with that. 67. “Years of Academy training wasted” = “Years of animated experience wasted” jokingly, obviously. 68. Now Woody needs help from Buzz, but he’s in his own little world. This looks like another Disney vs Pixar moment. They just got done yelling at them over a silly idea, now Disney needs help, but Pixar would rather mess around a little more, especially after they wanna be bullies. 69. Sid (Disney) is back, wanting to destroy more ideas… 70a 70b. He’s looking for 1 idea (Woody) and can’t find him, but accidentally steps on another idea (Buzz) and uses him…
38a 38b. I actually came up with this one a couple days before creating this post. But right now, Sid is Disney, again bullying people (I’ll bring this up later) 39a 39b. Right now, Buzz isn’t Disney. He’s a friend who wants to know what’s going on, to which Rex replies “That ain’t no happy child, he tortures toys just for fun” = “Their not a good company, they throw out ideas just for fun” Buzz thinks he can stop him, but Woody reminds him he’s just a toy. As with any company, we workers can’t really do much when our boss (in this case Disney) just won’t budge. (skipped 40) 41a 41b. Woody comes up with a plan to eliminate Buzz, and executes it perfectly… 42. “What if Andy starts playing with me more, you gonna knock me out the window too” = “What if he likes my ideas more than yours, you gonna fire me too” 43. Andy can’t find Buzz, so he’s forced to take Woody. When the guy with the brains isn’t around, sometimes you have to make due with whatever’s left. 44. “Revenge is not something we promote on our planet” = “I wouldn’t hit you while on the job, but I will now that we’re away from the workplace” 45. While their fighting, Andy and his mom drive off. This is basically saying, that there’s no need to fight because (as we find out later) Andy is sad when he sees that neither Woody nor Buzz are in the car. You have to put your differences to the side for the sake of the kids, cause if you don’t your only gonna end up hurtin them. 46a 46b. Woody is sad, cause he let that argument tear him away from Andy. Meanwhile Buzz is so distracted talkin into his imaginary wrist-phone thingy lol. The contrast here is obvious: Woody is worry about Andy, while Buzz is worried about business. Pixar care about the kids, while Disney only care about money, not realizing that without the kids, there is no money. 47. I literally just thought about this. Usually when humans are around, the toys must remain motionless so they don’t know their alive, and Woody does that here. Realistically I don’t think the driver would’ve seen him, but that’s not the point I wanna make. The point is Woody is so accustomed to playing dead, as he does here, but here he almost gets crushed by the truck. To me that’s a good interpretation of what Pixar does, laying down for Disney, having to listen to them even though they don’t want to. And as we see here, it almost got them crushed. 48. Buzz thinks he has it all figured it, but Woody reminds him he’s just a toy. The parallels here are pretty obvious: Disney being Buzz, Woody being Pixar. “You are a toy!” = “You’re not as creative as you think!” I love Woody in this scene, again showing his passion for Andy. But under all the anger you can tell he’s upset that he lost Andy. 49. Woody uses Buzz’ love of space ships to trick him into getting in the pizza truck. Sometimes you have to lie to people in order to get them to follow you / listen to you. And Buzz (only having money on his mind) blindly follows him. 50a 50b. This scene reminds me of the scene earlier before Buzz arrived, when the kids bum-rushed the room. Here, even though Woody helped him, Buzz is actin like he’s in charge again. Disney has no respect for how Pixar helped them with their ideas. 51. You can’t have a burger without the drink, just like you can’t have Disney without Pixar (as much as they hated each other) 52. Even though Buzz was being bossy, he still says “Good work Woody” 53a 53b. Woody wants to jump in the basket and rejoin Andy, but Buzz runs towards the space ship. Again, this is Pixar vs Disney: Pixar wanna please the kids, while Disney wanna please themselves. A similar scene is in Monster Inc when Sully is lookin for Boo. Again using the spaceship theme, you can’t reach for the stars and succeed without the kids, something Disney doesn’t realise.
19. Rex is so worried about being replaced that he starts shaking the table. He could represent people at Pixar having their ideas being ignored. This could also be seen as a phone call, and one of the employees worried about what the boss is sayin. 20a 20b. Woody and the toys find out the boys and the presents are coming up, so they panic. Pixar knows their not gonna like these new ideas… 21a 21b 21c 21d. As you can see, Disney aren’t that nice when it comes to their ideas, with no regard to the workplace environment. New ideas come, and the regulars are treated like crap… 23. Behold… The new idea… 24. Buzz takes himself way too seriously, thinkin he’s the real deal. Disney are so caught-up in their hype, they don’t realise how foolish they sound. 25. “Seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere” = “Seems to be nobody at this company with any bright ideas” 26. Woody tells him the bed is “my spot” = “my ideas” 27. Buzz meets his friends, telling them “I come in peace” and Rex goes “I’m so glad your not a dinosaur” Dinosaurs are usually known for eating people, but the idea here is he knows he’s not gonna be eaten metaphorically / have his ideas dumped on. 28. “Buzz Light-year to the rescue!” = “Disney is gonna save the box office” but we all know he’s not rescuing anybody… 29. The toys ask him where he’s from, and Buzz gives them this huge scripted response. This can be seen as that one guy in the room who says he has an idea, but he’s only saying what you wanna hear, or telling you something his boss told him. 30. Woody isn’t impressed, and neither is Pixar… 31a 31b. Woody calls him a toy, but Buzz tells him he’s a space ranger, again taking himself too seriously. Woody also tells him he can’t fly, but Buzz says he can. The word “fly” is a metaphor for “box office success” (skipped 32) 33. With the help of a magnet he’s able to fly around the room… 34. Woody calls it “falling with style” and as I said with #31 the idea here is that sure, Disney can succeed, but not without help… the term “falling with style” to me means “lucky box office despite boring story” 35. Buzz teaching Rex how to scare = Disney teaching its workers how to scare Pixar… 36.
“You wanna do it the hard way” = “Don’t put down my ideas” “You actually think your Buzz Lightyear” = “You actually think your ideas are that good” This is off topic but I always loved this scene, and I love Woody’s attitude. And I totally get where he’s coming from, not wanting something that he owns, taken from him. He’s such a determined, and passionate character and I love that about him. (skipped 37) Toy Story part 1 Out of all the Pixar movies, I would definitely say that Toy Story and Monsters Inc are their best films: their just so unique and witty and spontaneous. All my reviews for animated movies are only 1 paragraph in length, but trust me, as a movie lover that doesn’t mean that I don’t see and appreciate all the stuff they cram into these films. In short, Toy Story is the perfect example of life imitating art, sorta in the same way as Rocky (1976) As with the other blogs I’ve done, I don’t know if other bloggers have picked up on this, but alotta this stuff I didn’t realise till I got older. I think I mentioned this in the Monsters Inc walkthrough, but as a kid when you see these movies, their just cool movies. But its not till you get older till you realise what these movies are really about, and you have to read between the lines to really see what’s going on. I also try not to steal from other people, but the main thing is I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who’s done this. I know there’s a big post out there called the Pixar Theory, where the author shows us how all the Pixar movies are connected, but that was probably the only big one I read. And props to him, cause alotta people don’t do this stuff. You can buy and see all the movies you want, but I think it takes a very passionate movie lover to do what we do and break these movies down, analyze certain scenes and search for metaphors. I grew up with this movie and many others, but I wouldn’t say I study them. I just watch them on tv and write down what I see, everything else comes after. You either have it or you don’t and if you have it, you don’t need to study. I’ve grown up with these movies as a kid, but didn’t realise this stuff till I was older, some stuff I didn’t realise till literally a week before writing this. Before doing this, I only had about 8-9 scenes I really wanted to do, but once I began writing, I instantly came up with the other 80 or whatever almost immediately after I saw the picture. It’s weird cause as you watch the movie, you can pick some of this stuff out. But when you see the movie just in pictures, you actually pick out alot more. I guess that’s cause its not in motion and you can focus on one scene / frame as long as you want, I don’t know. Some people are just wired that way. And I love to collect pictures so there’s also that. So anyway, the biggest theme here, is Pixar vs Disney / DreamWorks which I’m gonna bring up alot. As of this writing I don’t know the whole story between Disney and Pixar, and I don’t even know if it was Disney or DreamWorks. I’ll just use Disney for these examples cause the name is shorter, but you get what I’m saying. I’m referring to whatever company was in charge before Pixar came along, but I know that this was Pixar’s first movie and they were under a big microscope when it came to making it. I also know Disney hated the character of Woody when they first saw him, so this movie is basically a parody of that. The Disney theme rotates from character to character: sometimes their Buzz, sometimes their Woody, sometimes their Andy, but the message is the same, so here goes: 1. “This is a stickup! Don’t anybody move!” says Mr Potato Head. To me, he kinda represents how Disney treated its workers, before Toy Story was a success. Obviously they didn’t use a gun, but you get the idea, very bossy. 2. “Money Money Money” maybe another Disney reference, them being so concerned about money, not about story… 3a 3b “Reach for the Sky” = “Don’t listen to that mean old boss / Don’t listen to Disney” 4. Usually in these movies, Rex always tries to scare people, but it doesn’t work. Again this might be what Pixar thinks of Disney. Their trying to scare em by bossing them around, but it doesn’t work. 5. Disney gets manhandled by a baby lol. The baby is basically saying “WHY DON”T YOU LISTEN TO US!” 6a 6b. Right now, Disney is Andy. They have to get ready for work, but Molly looks like she still wants to play… 7. “The coast is clear!” = “Disney’s not here, lets talk!” 8a 8b. Woody asks Soldier how he’s doing, but he immediately gets very serious, till Woody tells him to calm down. Their so used to being bossed around by grumpy people (Disney workers) they don’t know when to let loose, even when the boss is gone. 9. “Be happy about it!” = “We’re getting bossed around, but let’s try to be calm about it” 10a 10b. You’re at work, and you think your cool with someone, till they stab you in the back! 11. Same thing I said in #4… 12. Sometimes its hard to be romantic when your stressed out at work. I kinda mentioned this in the Monsters Inc walkthrough… 13a 13b. Woody talks about getting a moving buddy, and Mr Potato Head goes “Do we have to hold hands?” which to me, means “I know we’re getting bossed around but do we have to work with them?” 14. Rex talks about getting replaced… replaced with an idea Disney thought was better… 15. “It doesn’t matter how much we’re played with, what matters is we’re here for Andy” = “It doesn’t matter what ideas we have, what matters is we’re here to make money” -Disney or this could be Pixar saying “it doesn’t matter how much money we make, what matters is that we make a child happy” 16a 16b. Pig announces the kids are here, and all the toys go crazy! The kids represent Disney and their new ideas. 17a 17b. I love this scene, Woody goes “C’mon their not lying down on the job” and you immediately see them on the ground lol. They use a similar scene like this in Monsters Inc. 18. “A good soldier never leaves a man behind!” This quote could work for both Pixar and Disney, but it could also work for the animators too, always helping each other out.
39. After all the bickering and verbal put-downs (from Disney) you (Pixar) think its finally time to go back out there and be successful… But you get put right back down, disappointed again… 40. “Why do you like Pixar more than us!” 41. After saving the kids from Disney, the only people left who wanna throw criticism are the ones who are afraid to show their face (Randall) This could also be seen as Disney (Mike) realizing that Sully (Pixar) was right about some of their ideas. 42. Same as #14… again… 43. Pixar opened alotta doors for animated movies, now it’s the thing keepin them afloat… 44. Business wise, the kids will expose your true colors… She could also be saying “US KIDS MADE YOU WHAT YOU ARE WHY DON”T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS!” or “IT DOESN”T MATTER WHICH COMPANY MAKES THE BETTER MOVIE WE JUST WANT A GOOD FILM!” 45. “I’ll kidnap 1000 kids before I let this company die” = Disney “I don’t care how upset these kids are as long as we’re makin money” 46a 46b. Now that Boo is gone, alot of the heart is gone and it’s just not as funny. A good comedy has the perfect mixture of comedy and heart, especially in films like Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire, etc. 47a 47b. Disney are still oblivious to being ignored…
21a 21b. Again, Disney making a big deal over a kid. But at this point, Pixar knows kids love them cause Toy Story was such a success, so they do what they want. “That thing is a killing machine!” but we all know, the kids that buy these movies, their really ‘money-making’ machines. (skipped 22) 23a 23b. Trying to sneak an idea past the boss… 24. Mike is shocked that Sully is now friends with the baby. Disney is shocked that one of it’s own colleagues has accepted a Pixar idea. 25. Same as #14… 26. Disney (Randall) is angry at one of its clients (Mike) for accepting a Pixar idea. And when their questioned about it, they act like they don’t know what’s going on, fearing embarrassment. 27. The success of Toy Story will bring you fans… 28. “How many kids you got in there” = “Pixar, how many idea you got left” They (Disney) are sad one of Pixar’s ideas got destroyed, but the only thing they care about is “how many you got left” 29. And with an attitude like that, you deserve to get bitten lol. 30. Mike (Disney) wants Sully (Pixar) to give up their best idea, but they don’t want to… 31. Keeping good ideas around is good cause they can help you out… 32. After the success of Toy Story, we want all of your ideas! 33. Mike tries to bribe the guy getting bossed around by Randall, to which the guy rejects. Sometimes when the bigger guy is in charge (Disney) you gotta do what they want, even though their not the one comin up with the ideas. 34. Almost identical to the scene in Toy Story where their about to jump in the basket and Buzz runs off. 35. “It’s all about presence / how you enter the room” this is the same in the workplace… 36a 36b. Disney wants him to scare the kids, but Sully (Pixar) doesn’t want to… 37. They could be saying 2 things here: a. “We have all your ideas and we don’t need you anymore” b. after scaring Boo “If you scare the kids, they won’t buy your movies, and you will be left behind” and to me, honestly I think both work 38a 38b. Sometimes you gotta leave friends behind in order to be successful…
Monsters Inc Out of all the animated films Pixar has ever made, Monsters Inc will always be 2nd best to me, right after Toy Story. It’s just so witty, yet so cute. Depending on when you read this (before or after Toy Story) this is basically my continuation of everything I said in the Toy Story post, about Pixar vs Disney / DreamWorks. In making Toy Story, they (Disney / DreamWorks) said originally Woody’s attitude would’ve scared kids, so Pixar went back and toned him down for the movie. Obviously the fear of scaring kids wasn’t the case, as that movie turned out to be a huge success, so they responded by making a movie entirely about scaring kids: 1a 1b. Kid thinks the monster is trying to scare him, but he messes it up and falls over. This is basically Pixar poking fun at Disney, letting them know it’s not really their intention. 2. Mike is preparing Sully to scare the kids, but in a humorous way… 3. Mike tries to sit in Sully’s chair, but Sully moves him to his chair. This is Pixar going “you can help me but you’re still not the boss” 4. Same as #3 “you can help me, but this isn’t about you…” 5. Mike doesn’t realize he’s not as recognized as he’d like to be. Same as #3 and #4 Disney doesn’t realise their services weren’t really needed. 6. This is similar to the joke in Toy Story 2 where Al complains about going to work when he’s really only a block away. 7. Again #3 & #5 8a 8b. Randall tries to scare Mike and Sully, and Mike goes “One of these days I’m gonna let you teach that guy a lesson” even though you get the feeling he wants to do it himself. That happens alot in the workplace, having to hold stuff inside when a guy (Disney) tries to act like their smarter than you with their ideas. 9. I guess the metaphor here is Toy Story opened alotta doors for other animated movies which up until 1995 were all hand-drawn. Toys opened the door for Monsters to walk though, as weird as that sounds. 10. Their job is to scare children from all around the world even though people from all around the world are the ones that bought their movie. 11. Right now Mike is Disney, Sully is Pixar. You can hype me up, but you don’t have to do anything, just sit back and let us do the work. 12a 12b. Sully vs Randall = Disney vs Pixar. Who can entertain the most kids… 13a 13b. Troops are called all over a harmless sock. Disney making a big deal over 1 small little idea. 14. Working on these movies so long, one barely has time to spend with their significant other… 15. Winnie Cooper… I mean Boo! 16. It’s pretty obvious kids are afraid of these kinda monsters, take that Disney! 17. Kid wants to play with Sully, but all that joy needs to be hidden by Disney, who think their too scary. 18. Sully tells Mike Randall is cheating. Disney knows they can’t please the kids truthfully, so they cheat. 19. Now the kids are the one doing the scaring... 20. Disney making a big deal over a kid.
Appreciation I started doing this above, but it got really repetitive bringing it up over and over so I just brought them all down here. This was another thing I didn’t realise till I was older, how this entire movie is not only about Beetlejuice. It’s about people who just don’t feel appreciated and / or just aren’t noticed, and I’ve come up with alotta scenes that showcase this: 1a 1b. Adam tries to yell down to the people below but they don’t see him… 2. Old man tries to talk to Adam but he gets ignored… 3. Lydia is ignored by her parents… 4. Beetlejuice in the complex all day by himself… 5. Woman who used to live there just wants to be noticed and she wants people to appreciate the work she’s put into the house… 6. The mother tries to tell one of the movers that her sculpture means alot to her, but he looks like he doesn’t care… 7. Once you’re gone, your items just aren’t appreciated by others the way you want… 8. You think its art, but others have a look of boredom… 9. They’ll even ignore your dead body, as long as they get what’s yours… 10. You feel rejected, and left in the dust… 11. And even when you’re in the dust people will still try to nip at you… 12. It’s best if you just return and face facts… 13. “You don’t appreciate my art, so I want you to see it!” 14. Guy gets killed and still has to run errands… that’s not right… 15a 15b. You never see me (no eyes) you lie alot (long nose) but my mouth is wide open! 16. “I know he doesn’t appreciate my art but I don’t care”
