Toy Story part 1
Out of all the Pixar movies, I would definitely say that Toy Story and Monsters Inc are their best films: their just so unique and witty and spontaneous. All my reviews for animated movies are only 1 paragraph in length, but trust me, as a movie lover that doesn’t mean that I don’t see and appreciate all the stuff they cram into these films. In short, Toy Story is the perfect example of life imitating art, sorta in the same way as Rocky (1976)
As with the other blogs I’ve done, I don’t know if other bloggers have picked up on this, but alotta this stuff I didn’t realise till I got older. I think I mentioned this in the Monsters Inc walkthrough, but as a kid when you see these movies, their just cool movies. But its not till you get older till you realise what these movies are really about, and you have to read between the lines to really see what’s going on. I also try not to steal from other people, but the main thing is I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who’s done this. I know there’s a big post out there called the Pixar Theory, where the author shows us how all the Pixar movies are connected, but that was probably the only big one I read.
And props to him, cause alotta people don’t do this stuff. You can buy and see all the movies you want, but I think it takes a very passionate movie lover to do what we do and break these movies down, analyze certain scenes and search for metaphors. I grew up with this movie and many others, but I wouldn’t say I study them. I just watch them on tv and write down what I see, everything else comes after. You either have it or you don’t and if you have it, you don’t need to study. I’ve grown up with these movies as a kid, but didn’t realise this stuff till I was older, some stuff I didn’t realise till literally a week before writing this.
Before doing this, I only had about 8-9 scenes I really wanted to do, but once I began writing, I instantly came up with the other 80 or whatever almost immediately after I saw the picture. It’s weird cause as you watch the movie, you can pick some of this stuff out. But when you see the movie just in pictures, you actually pick out alot more. I guess that’s cause its not in motion and you can focus on one scene / frame as long as you want, I don’t know. Some people are just wired that way. And I love to collect pictures so there’s also that.
So anyway, the biggest theme here, is Pixar vs Disney / DreamWorks which I’m gonna bring up alot. As of this writing I don’t know the whole story between Disney and Pixar, and I don’t even know if it was Disney or DreamWorks. I’ll just use Disney for these examples cause the name is shorter, but you get what I’m saying. I’m referring to whatever company was in charge before Pixar came along, but I know that this was Pixar’s first movie and they were under a big microscope when it came to making it. I also know Disney hated the character of Woody when they first saw him, so this movie is basically a parody of that.
The Disney theme rotates from character to character: sometimes their Buzz, sometimes their Woody, sometimes their Andy, but the message is the same, so here goes:

The Disney theme rotates from character to character: sometimes their Buzz, sometimes their Woody, sometimes their Andy, but the message is the same, so here goes:
1. “This is a stickup! Don’t anybody move!” says Mr Potato Head. To me, he kinda represents how Disney treated its workers, before Toy Story was a success. Obviously they didn’t use a gun, but you get the idea, very bossy.
2. “Money Money Money” maybe another Disney reference, them being so concerned about money, not about story…
3a 3b “Reach for the Sky” = “Don’t listen to that mean old boss / Don’t listen to Disney”
4. Usually in these movies, Rex always tries to scare people, but it doesn’t work. Again this might be what Pixar thinks of Disney. Their trying to scare em by bossing them around, but it doesn’t work.
5. Disney gets manhandled by a baby lol. The baby is basically saying “WHY DON”T YOU LISTEN TO US!”
6a 6b. Right now, Disney is Andy. They have to get ready for work, but Molly looks like she still wants to play…
7. “The coast is clear!” = “Disney’s not here, lets talk!”
8a 8b. Woody asks Soldier how he’s doing, but he immediately gets very serious, till Woody tells him to calm down. Their so used to being bossed around by grumpy people (Disney workers) they don’t know when to let loose, even when the boss is gone.
9. “Be happy about it!” = “We’re getting bossed around, but let’s try to be calm about it”
10a 10b. You’re at work, and you think your cool with someone, till they stab you in the back!
11. Same thing I said in #4…
12. Sometimes its hard to be romantic when your stressed out at work. I kinda mentioned this in the Monsters Inc walkthrough…
13a 13b. Woody talks about getting a moving buddy, and Mr Potato Head goes “Do we have to hold hands?” which to me, means “I know we’re getting bossed around but do we have to work with them?”
14. Rex talks about getting replaced… replaced with an idea Disney thought was better…
15. “It doesn’t matter how much we’re played with, what matters is we’re here for Andy” = “It doesn’t matter what ideas we have, what matters is we’re here to make money” -Disney
or this could be Pixar saying “it doesn’t matter how much money we make, what matters is that we make a child happy”
or this could be Pixar saying “it doesn’t matter how much money we make, what matters is that we make a child happy”
16a 16b. Pig announces the kids are here, and all the toys go crazy! The kids represent Disney and their new ideas.
17a 17b. I love this scene, Woody goes “C’mon their not lying down on the job” and you immediately see them on the ground lol. They use a similar scene like this in Monsters Inc.
18. “A good soldier never leaves a man behind!” This quote could work for both Pixar and Disney, but it could also work for the animators too, always helping each other out.
